There have been a few times since but none have ever taken more than two. 22 short and I said never again would it take more than one. When I was a kid I had to shoot a squirrel three times with a. So all have been under 100 yards in range. Must take into consideration that I do my very best to only take "sure" shots and I will not take the shot otherwise. If memory serves me correctly, none have walked over twenty five yards or so. Both were neck shots thru the white of the throat and severed, no destroyed the spinal column. Both the first one and the last were instant, DRT as soon as the bullet connected.
I really do not know how many there have been thru the years but I do know that each and every one was a one-shot proposition. If you are talking about the cartridge only, then I can say this: my first deer kill and my most recent deer kill as well as several in between were made with that carbine. 30-40s made in other locations and I think (do not quote me since I am working on the memory of a 65 year old) there was a Swedish made Krag-Jorgensen that was something of a contemporary of my Cavalry Carbine (the rifle that accompanied TR and the Rough Riders up Kettle Hill and San Juan Hill during the Spanish-American War in Cuba). That is if you are talking about the rifle. It is one absolutely beautiful bolt-action firearm. Quick to reload and the cut-off feature is a throwback to the thinking behind the Trapdoor Springfield. The ONLY downside is the funky side-loading magazine but with the cut-off feature, even that makes great sense. By far the slickest bolt action I have ever shot or certainly owned and that counts several Mausers, Remingtons, other Springfields, and even a 50's Winchester Model 70. Springfield 1903's are awesome but they honestly do not come close to the Springfield. Government actually issued this finely made piece of ordinance to the troops.
I really do find it difficult to believe that the U.S. Sadly, it has been lightly "sporterized" meaning the rear sight was removed and replaced with a really sweet peep sight.
